Why does 170 cm show as 5 ft 6.9 in?
The converter keeps one decimal place for inches. 170 ÷ 2.54 = 66.93 inches, and after 5 feet (60 inches) that leaves 6.93, shown as 6.9. Forms that ask for whole inches round it to 5 ft 7 in, and converting 5 ft 7 in back gives 170.18 cm, displayed as 170.2, so a round trip drifts by a fraction of a centimeter.
When the inches round up to 12, the tool carries them into the next foot. 182.8 cm is 71.97 inches, which would round to 5 ft 12.0 in, so the display reads 6 ft 0 in. The inches box steps in halves with its arrows, but you can type any value, and amounts of 12 or more count as extra inches: 5 ft 14 in gives 188 cm, the same as 6 ft 2 in.
How many centimeters are 5 feet and 6 feet?
The large result shows whichever unit you did not type in, and the line beneath it adds total inches and meters. A chart beside the converter runs from 140 to 210 cm in 5 cm steps and highlights the row within 2.5 cm of your entry. For the reverse direction: 5 ft is exactly 152.4 cm, 5 ft 4 in is 162.6 cm, 5 ft 10 in is 177.8 cm and 6 ft is 182.9 cm. Each 5 cm row adds just under 2 inches (1.97), and each extra inch adds 2.54 cm.
The BMI Calculator takes height as a single number in cm, inches or decimal feet. Decimal feet trip people up: 5.7 ft is 5 ft 8.4 in (173.7 cm), because 0.7 of a foot is 8.4 inches. If you are 5 ft 7 in, enter 5.58 ft, 67 inches or 170.2 cm. For room sizes and other lengths in meters, yards or miles, the Unit Converter covers more units.
How do you measure your height accurately at home?
Stand barefoot with your back and heels against a wall, looking straight ahead. Rest a flat object such as a hardback book on your head, square against the wall, mark its underside, and measure from the floor to the mark. Read the tape to the nearest millimeter and type the value with one decimal: 168.4 cm, for example, shows as 5 ft 6.3 in.
Height also changes a little through the day, and most people measure slightly taller in the morning, so compare readings taken at the same time of day.
