How does PDF to Word rebuild the text?
Your browser reads each page with pdf.js and collects every piece of text with its position. Pieces at almost the same height, within 4 points, are treated as one line, ordered left to right and joined with single spaces. Each line becomes its own paragraph in the DOCX, a page break separates the PDF pages, and your file name appears in bold at the top. The document is set to A4 with 1-inch margins and named after the PDF in lowercase with hyphens, so Bank Letter 2026.pdf becomes bank-letter-2026.docx.
Grouping by height alone merges columns. On a two-column newsletter whose left column starts with Monsoon sale and whose right column starts with Store timings at the same height, the first paragraph reads 'Monsoon sale Store timings'. Tables lose their grid in the same way: an invoice with the headings Qty, Rate and Amount gives the line 'Qty Rate Amount', and the row under it gives '2 450.00 900.00'. Lines follow their position from top to bottom, so a sidebar or caption lands wherever its height puts it.
What does the extracted line count tell you?
When the DOCX downloads, the status line reports how many text lines were extracted. A count of 0 means the PDF has no selectable text, and the DOCX holds only the title and page breaks. If the PDF needs a password to open, conversion stops with the message 'No password given', so remove the password first. How do you clean up the converted DOCX?
Expect to rejoin paragraphs. A sentence that wrapped over three lines in the PDF arrives as three paragraphs. In Word, select those lines and use Find and Replace to change the paragraph mark (^p) into a space, or paste the lines into Line Break Remover to join them. Words hyphenated at a line end keep the hyphen, so search for -^p as well. Running headers, footers and page numbers are text too, and they appear once for every page. Bold, italics, fonts, colours, images and links are not carried over, because only the text is extracted.
