How is the overall percentage worked out when maximum marks differ?
The tool adds the marks you scored across every counted subject, adds their maximum marks, and divides the first total by the second. A subject with a larger maximum therefore carries more weight, so a 30-mark practical counts for less than a 70-mark theory paper. Physics theory at 52 out of 70 and a practical at 27 out of 30 give 79 out of 100, or 79.00%. Averaging the two subject percentages, 74.29% and 90.00%, would give 82.14% instead.
Theory and practical can go in as separate rows or as one combined row; the total and the percentage come out the same either way. A subject marked 68 out of 80 in the written paper and 19 out of 20 in internal assessment can be entered as 87 out of 100 or as two rows. Decimal marks such as 72.5 work as well.
Why does leaving a subject blank change the result?
A row counts only when its Marks got box holds a number and its Out of value is above zero. Leave a row blank and it is skipped completely, maximum marks included, which pushes the percentage up. Say you scored 70, 65, 80 and 75 out of 100 and 0 in a fifth paper. With the fifth row blank, the result is 290 out of 400, 72.50%, First Division. Type 0 and it becomes 290 out of 500, 58.00%, Second Division.
The line under the percentage shows how many subjects were counted, so compare it with the number you meant to enter. Nothing stops marks above the maximum, so a slip such as 850 for 85 goes straight into the total. Subject names are only labels. You can add as many rows as you like, and the last remaining row cannot be removed.
What do the Distinction and division labels mean?
The label depends on the overall percentage alone. At 75% and above the tool shows Distinction; below that it applies the 60%, 50% and 33% cutoffs for first, second and third division, and anything under 33% shows as below passing.
Subject-wise pass marks are not checked. Boards such as CBSE also require a minimum score in each subject, so an overall Third Division does not mean every paper was cleared.
