BMP vs JPG: what changes
- JPG files are usually much smaller than BMP, so this is a good way to save space or speed up a page.
- JPG uses lossy compression, which trades a little quality for a smaller file. Raise the quality setting if you see blur around text or edges.
- BMP stores pixels with no compression at all, resulting in very large files. Converting to JPG significantly reduces file size.

How big is a BMP file, and how is its size worked out?
Most BMP files store raw pixels with no compression. A 24-bit BMP uses 3 bytes per pixel, pads each row to a multiple of 4 bytes and usually adds a 54-byte header. For a 1920 × 1080 screenshot that comes to 1920 × 3 × 1080 + 54 = 6,220,854 bytes. The tool counts in 1,024-byte units and lists that as 5.93 MB, while a file manager that counts in thousands shows 6.2 MB. At 1366 × 768, each 4,098-byte row is padded to 4,100 bytes, giving 3,148,854 bytes, or 3.00 MB.
Some BMPs are smaller because they use an 8-bit palette or run-length compression, and 32-bit BMPs are larger at 4 bytes per pixel. Whatever the variant, your browser decodes it to full-color pixels before the JPG is made, and any transparent areas it reads become white.
How does the conversion work, and which quality should you pick?
The image is drawn at full size onto a canvas filled with white, then saved as a JPG at the slider's quality, so the JPG keeps the BMP's exact width and height. Quality runs from 50 to 100 on the slider and starts at 92. Each card shows the BMP size, the JPG size and, when the JPG is smaller, the saving as a whole-number percentage. Moving the slider and clicking Convert to JPG again re-encodes from the original BMP, so you can compare settings without stacking compression.
JPG is the right target for photos and scanned pictures. Screenshots with text, diagrams and pixel art are a weaker fit, because JPG compression leaves faint smudges around sharp edges; BMP to PNG keeps such images pixel-exact and still far smaller than the BMP. A file named scan-001.bmp saves as scan-001.jpg, and two or more files download as bmp-to-jpg-converted.zip.
