What does each exam preset set?
The presets are SSC Photo (20 KB, 200×230 pixels), UPSC Photo (200 KB, 350×350), IBPS Photo (50 KB, 200×230), PAN Card Photo (20 KB, 213×213) and Passport size (50 KB, no fixed pixel size). Compare them with the current notification before you apply, because the form's own instructions are what the portal checks. A preset with pixel dimensions crops the photo from the centre to that shape, scales it to the exact size on a white background and then lowers only the JPEG quality. It never shrinks the dimensions to save space.
Centre cropping decides what survives. A 4000×3000 landscape shot fitted to SSC's 200×230 keeps the middle 2609×3000 area and loses about 696 pixels from each side. Fitted to the square PAN preset, a 3000×4000 portrait loses 500 pixels from the top and 500 from the bottom. Keep your face near the middle of the frame, with some space above the head, so the crop does not cut into it.
Is 20 KB here the same as 20 KB on the portal?
The tool counts 1 KB as 1,024 bytes, so the SSC preset aims for at most 20,480 bytes. A portal that counts 1,000 bytes per kilobyte allows 20,000, and a 20,300-byte photo passes here but fails there. The size line rounds to one decimal place, and any result shown as 19.4 KB or less is under 20,000 bytes.
Typing a number in the KB box switches the tool to Custom and drops the preset's pixel size, so a lower target needs two passes. Run the SSC preset, press Change image and load the JPG you just downloaded. The target still reads 20, so type 19 in the KB box. Custom keeps the size of an image under 4000 pixels and lowers quality first, so the second file stays 200×230 and comes in under 19,456 bytes.
How do you make a 35×45 mm photo under 50 KB?
The Passport size preset sets only the 50 KB target. It keeps your photo's proportions and pixel size, up to 4000 pixels on a side. For a 35×45 mm photo, make it in the Passport Photo Maker first, which saves 413×531 pixels for that size, then bring the JPG here and choose Passport size.
Change image also clears the selected preset, so pick it again for each new photo. A source smaller than the preset, such as a tightly cropped 150×170 face, is enlarged to fit and turns blurry, so start from the original camera file.
