PNG to WebP Converter
Convert PNG images to WebP format — can be 60-80% smaller for graphics while keeping transparency. Batch supported.
PNG vs WebP: what changes
- WebP files are usually smaller than PNG, so this is a good way to save space or speed up a page.
- WebP is supported in all modern browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari 14+), making it a great choice for web use.

Lossy or lossless: which WebP do you get?
That depends on the slider, which runs from 50% to 100% and starts at 80%. Any value below 100% gives lossy WebP, with transparency kept in a separate alpha channel. At exactly 100%, Chrome and Edge write lossless WebP, which adds no compression loss and is often still smaller than the original PNG.
Lossy WebP stores colour at half the width and half the height of brightness, a scheme called 4:2:0 chroma subsampling: each 2 x 2 block of pixels keeps four brightness values and only one colour sample. Photos hide this well. A one-pixel red line on white, though, shares its colour sample with white neighbours and comes out paler and slightly smeared, so for logos, icons, interface screenshots and diagrams, try 100% first.
How do you find the smallest file that still looks right?
Convert once, then read each card: original size, WebP size and, when the file shrank, the saving. A 3.00 MB PNG that becomes 2.00 MB reads 33% smaller. Move the slider and press Convert to WebP again; every file is re-encoded from its original PNG, so trying several settings costs no extra quality.
Judge the result at full size. Lossy artifacts show first along text edges and where transparent areas meet solid ones. PNGs already squeezed into a small colour palette by an optimiser may shrink only a little, and the card shows whether they did.
What does not carry over from the PNG?
WebP holds 8 bits per channel, so a 16-bit PNG from a scanner or photo editor is reduced to 8 bits. Text chunks and other metadata are not copied. Pixel dimensions and transparency stay as they were, and only the extension changes: icon@2x.png becomes icon@2x.webp, with batches arriving as png-to-webp-converted.zip.
Animated PNGs come out as a single still image. Dragging files onto the drop zone accepts any image type, so JPGs mixed into a drop are converted too. Keep the PNG as well if the image will travel beyond web pages, since some desktop software and upload forms still refuse WebP. For a mixed batch of JPG, PNG and GIF files, Image to WebP Converter takes any image your browser can open.
