AVIF vs JPG: what changes
- JPG files are usually larger than AVIF at similar quality, because AVIF compresses more efficiently. The gain is compatibility.

What changes when an AVIF image becomes a JPG?
Your browser's own AVIF decoder reads the file, and the image is drawn at full size onto a canvas that has first been filled with white. The JPG is encoded from that canvas, so it keeps the pixel dimensions, transparent areas take on the white underneath, and an animated AVIF gives only its first frame. A file named holiday.avif saves as holiday.jpg, and two or more converted files download together as avif-to-jpg-converted.zip.
AVIF can store 10-bit or 12-bit color and HDR brightness, while the canvas holds 8 bits per channel in standard sRGB. A 10-bit file has 1,024 levels per channel and the JPG has 256, so subtle gradients are rounded to fewer steps and HDR highlights are brought into the standard range. An ordinary 8-bit AVIF loses nothing at this step, apart from the JPG compression itself.
Why is the JPG larger than the AVIF?
AVIF is built on the AV1 video codec and usually needs far fewer bytes than JPG for a similar look, so the converted file is normally bigger. Each card lists the original size and the new size, and it adds a percentage only when the JPG came out smaller. The quality slider runs from 50 to 100 and starts at 92; lower values give smaller files with more visible compression artifacts. Every click on Convert to JPG starts again from the original AVIF files, so trying a second setting never compresses an image twice.
Keep the AVIF for a modern website and convert only the copies that have to open in older software, email or upload forms. If the image has transparency you need, use AVIF to PNG; a white logo on a transparent AVIF background would vanish against the white fill in a JPG. What if a file in the batch will not convert?
Files are converted one after another, and a failure only affects its own card, which reports that the file could not be converted. The usual cause is a browser without AVIF decoding, and the same file may work in a current version of another browser. Any image type your browser can open is accepted when dropped, so a stray PNG or WebP in the batch is converted to JPG along with the AVIF files.
