Does GIF to PNG keep the exact colors and transparency?
Yes. The tool draws the first frame onto a blank, transparent canvas and saves it with the browser's PNG encoder, which is lossless. Every color from the GIF palette comes through unchanged, and pixels marked transparent in the GIF stay transparent. Converting does not add colors, so a GIF limited to 256 colors stays limited to them, banding included. A file named badge.gif saves as badge.png, and a batch downloads as gif-to-png-converted.zip.
PNG can store partial transparency, from fully clear to fully solid, while a GIF pixel is either one or the other, and the conversion keeps edges exactly as they were, so jagged outlines stay jagged. GIF artwork made for a white page often has a pale fringe where edge pixels were blended with white when the GIF was created, and that fringe stays visible on a dark background.
Why can the PNG be larger than the GIF?
A GIF stores each pixel as a palette index of at most 8 bits and compresses those indexes. Browsers such as Chrome write canvas PNGs as full RGBA, 4 bytes per pixel before compression, so the PNG encoder starts with up to four times as much raw data. Flat-color graphics still compress well, but a busy or dithered GIF can produce a bigger PNG. The card shows both sizes and adds a percentage only when the PNG is smaller.
A GIF frame never has more than 256 colors, which is well under the 2,868-color limit Image Compressor applies at its default 70%. The compressor therefore has room for all of them, and with 256 colors or fewer it saves a palette PNG that stores one byte per pixel or less before compression, a quarter of the RGBA data or smaller.
Which frame does an animated GIF give?
You get the first frame only. If the animation opens on a blank frame or a fade, that is what the PNG shows, and the tool has no way to choose a later frame. Pixel art keeps its exact size and hard edges, because the frame is drawn at its original width and height without any scaling. The PNG never has more pixels than the GIF, so use the biggest original available.
