HEIC vs PNG: what changes
- PNG files are usually larger than HEIC, because PNG stores every pixel without loss. That makes it safe to edit and re-save, although it cannot restore detail the original compression removed.
- Converting to PNG gives you transparency support, though this conversion won't recover any transparency that HEIC already discarded.
- PNG is lossless, so it adds no compression of its own. In browsers that cannot open HEIC directly, the photo is first decoded through a high-quality JPEG step.
- PNG opens everywhere, including older phones, email clients and apps that can't handle HEIC.

Is HEIC to PNG lossless?
PNG adds no compression loss of its own, and what reaches it depends on your browser. If the browser can decode HEIC itself, the decoded pixels go straight onto a canvas and into the PNG. Otherwise the tool falls back to heic-to (libheif running in a Web Worker) and then to heic2any, and each of them hands back a JPEG at 95% quality, which is then drawn and saved as the PNG. On those browsers the PNG includes one extra round of light JPEG compression.
HEIC is a lossy format to begin with, so even the direct path cannot restore detail the camera's encoder discarded. What the PNG gives you is a file that almost any editor opens and that you can save again and again without further loss.
Why is the PNG so much bigger than the HEIC?
A 12-megapixel iPhone photo is 4032 × 3024 = 12,192,768 pixels, and the canvas hands the PNG encoder 4 bytes for each one, 48,771,072 bytes in all. Lossless compression removes only part of that from a detailed photo, so expect the PNG to be several times the size of the HEIC. Each card shows both sizes, with a percentage only when the new file is smaller. Finished PNGs are held in memory until you press Clear, so on a phone, convert a long batch in smaller groups.
For sharing or uploading, HEIC to JPG gives a far smaller file and has a quality slider. Choose PNG when the photo is headed into an editor, a document or an app that rejects HEIC, and you want a lossless file to work from.
What else changes in the converted file?
The PNG is built from pixels only, so the HEIC's EXIF data, including capture date, camera model and GPS location, is not carried over. Keep the originals if you sort photos by date. A Live Photo keeps its motion in a separate video file, so the PNG holds the still image only. Names keep their base, so IMG_4521.HEIC becomes IMG_4521.png, and two or more files download together as heic-to-png-converted.zip. A file that cannot be decoded shows a message on its card saying your browser may not support HEIC decoding, and the rest of the batch still converts.
